Customer's Requirements
Our customer faced a critical challenge with their aircraft's Environmental Control System (ECS). During emergency scenarios, such as smoke in the cockpit, the existing ECS was unable to clear the flight deck quickly and effectively. To address this, our customer approached Rotron for a robust solution. The requirement was for a DC fan that could operate efficiently under emergency conditions to enhance cockpit air quality and also adapt to serve in a secondary application for cargo bay ventilation at a lower speed. Rotron was chosen for its expertise and capability to meet the stringent specifications set by Boeing for these dual applications.
Rotron's Solution
During the initial phase of aircraft installations, a significant issue was uncovered. The inrush current from the fan operation was causing aircraft circuit breakers to trip, pointing to a gap in the initial specifications concerning the aircraft's supporting power system. The ideal solution seemed to involve extensive redesigning of the aircraft's electrical system, a costly and time-consuming endeavor. However, Rotron proposed an innovative approach to resolve the issue without necessitating major changes to the aircraft design. By integrating soft start circuitry into the EMI filter, Rotron successfully mitigated the inrush current issue, ensuring compatibility with the aircraft's existing electrical infrastructure. This solution was developed, and prototypes were delivered within six months from the project's scope revision. The original requirement for a 28VDC fan that met Boeing's specifications for the B787 program, including emergency operational capabilities, was fulfilled with this advanced design adjustment.

Customer's Requirements
When our customer passed down extremely demanding environmental qualification requirements to their suppliers, Rotron proposed a highly rugged solution that would go on to meet all of their requirements. For military helicopter applications, reliability is highly important, especially when it comes to thermal management. The customer's avionics system had to withstand a barrage of testing, including altitude, high and low temperatures, shock and vibration, gunfire, EMI, salt fog, sand and dust, and humidity.
Rotron's Solution
Only a handful of suppliers were able to meet these highly demanding requirements. Ultimately, Rotron's AC MAX 375 fan was selected for the application.
